14-April-2022

An entrepreneur makes a list and plan to turn the wheels of the company's business in order to get perfect results. Preparation is needed to adapt the strategy so that the business can reach the maximum target.

After the entrepreneur succeeded in carrying out his detailed plans and targets, several obstacles appeared in his business. This is usually caused by an error in making a goal. Not only knowing potential problems, business people must also be able to anticipate problems properly.

Potential Problems Due to Mistakes in Goal Setting

Having a goal in running a business is very important. But what if that goal creates problems? The following problems result from errors in setting goals.

1. Excessive Focus

Focus at work is very necessary to do at work. However, when excessive focus on doing a job is also not recommended. Such excessive focus can cause you to neglect other important issues and tasks.

For example, when a division rewards employees for meeting sales targets in a short period of time. In order to quickly pursue sales targets, these employees tend to be negligent and neglect other goals. However, other factors are still important to help the company grow even in the long term.

2. Taking Too Many Risks

Managers are often advised to have goals that are challenging enough in order to keep working as hard as possible and grow. Behavior that celebrates risk will only become a phenomenon of stretch goals. The target will not be achieved because there are too many risks that have the potential to destroy the value of the business.

3. Underestimating Time Limits and Distractions

As a manager, you must remain realistic about your team's deadlines, situation, and capabilities when setting goals for them. Some managers have high expectations of employees, such as assuming they will be prepared to provide work in their spare time.

Assume that things will come up, be it an emergency, an employee falling ill, or a global pandemic. The above things can happen and you have no control to change them. As a leader, you need to leave room for mistakes, setbacks, and vacation time when setting goals.

4. Setting Goals Not Based on Data

Sometimes, managers tend to set so-called ego-based goals and personal preferences. Despite the various tests, experiments and data that have been prepared, some leaders continue to return to their previous initiatives in the hope of progress in the business. Such behavior not only hinders the growth of the company, it also damages the reputation and trust of the manager in the eyes of their team.

How to Improve Goal Setting

It's important for negotiators, why are you suddenly talking about negotiators? to make goal setting and performance planning more effective. Managers can pay attention to three main points that need to be focused on in setting goals.

1. Choose the Right Partner

Know that performance planning is not something you have to do alone. To set goals, partners are needed, for example collaborating with team members. Process. Thus, managers need to know what employees' primary responsibilities are, what is expected in the role, and what they would like to see in terms of job performance.

2. Ensure Goals with Quality

Whenever you set a goal, think that it has a good quality. Make sure your goals consist of 5 points, namely specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and period-bound. One more important thing is employee motivation. You need to understand what motivates employees from this goal.

3. Determine the Level of Competence and Commitment

Managers need to consider individual competencies and the employee's level of commitment to a task. Avoid assumptions about veteran employees being able to carry out all tasks because they are more experienced. This is often the public's fault.

It is important for a manager to find out about experience with a particular task. Then, you can collaborate with employees who are in accordance with the conditions given. Provide direction and support so that they are successful in carrying out this particular task.

To be able to achieve its goals, a leader must adjust his leadership style so that he can move his team and subordinates effectively. Through the Team Leadership: Becoming Flexible Leader program, team leaders will learn how to give specific and clear directions, listen actively, provide feedback and increase the confidence of each team member.
